I hate cleaning my oven and I hate bug bites.

Now, about that oven…
Cleaning my oven is one of my least favorite chores in the world. Choosing an oven cleaners is a horrible task since oven cleaners are so toxic. I don’t want to cook my food in there after I use a terribly toxic oven cleaner. Yuck! Plus, I just don’t keep that toxic stuff in my house anymore.
Over the past few weeks I have been playing around with oven cleaning recipes in order to create the world’s best oven cleaning recipe. I want an oven cleaner that is going to peel off all the dirt and grime (not just get by with a gentle clean). I have been wanting to create one that is going to make cleaning the oven as easy peasy as possible. I’ve been mixing and matching oils to figure out which ones do the best dirty work.
I think I found the secret ingredients in order to make the grime disappear! And, my essential oils are the secret weapon.
I have the cleanest oven in the world! No joke!
My essential oils rock, really they do. They can do everything from help the body heal to make the baddest DIY recipes you’ve ever seen. They are so versatile it is incredible!
Let’s take a look at the evidence, shall we?
My oven…
That gross mess on the bottom of my oven? It was baked on! It was a bad nasty mess. I’ve actually already tried a previous recipe that didn’t work out on that spot. That recipe did not make the cut.
But, I did dream up a miracle recipe.
Just look at my oven now…
Booyah!!!
It sparkles doesn’t it? Yay! I was so excited to create a non-toxic cleaning recipe that is making my oven sparkly clean.
I know you are dying to know what recipe I used so here it is!
DIY Homemade Oven Cleaner
Ingredients:
1 1/2 cup baking soda
1/2 cup sea salt (I always use this kind)
1/2 cup washing soda
enough filtered water to make a thin paste
1/2 cup white vinegar
10 drops lemon essential oil (I recommend this kind)
10 drops Melaleuca a. essential oil (I recommend this kind)
Directions:
Preheat your oven to the lowest temperature possible and turn it off.
Then, add baking soda, sea salt, and washing soda to a small bowl. Mix well. Add lemon and Melaleuca a. essential oils. Then add vinegar (it will fizz a little). After that slowly add water until it forms a thin paste. You want it thin enough to spread on your oven walls. If it is too thick it will be difficult to spread.
Spread the paste all over your oven and leave on overnight.
In the mornings wipe out your oven with warm water.
Wow, my oven looks like new!

Hi, I’m so excited to see this recipe! I’m a little confused by the directions, though. What temperature should you preheat the oven to (looks like you maybe left out a word?)? Do you apply the paste to the oven while it’s still hot? Thanks so much!

Thanks Amanda. I was missing a word. I fixed it. You do apply the paste to the oven while it is warm and not hot.
The ingredients list lemon and melaleuca oil. But, directions state lemon and eucalyptus oil. Which two are you using?
I’ll change that. The oil I used was the melaleuca oil that is in the photo.

I was wondering something……… are the essential oils necessary or just for the scent ?
Yes Laurie the essential oils are very important in this recipe. The oils are not for the scent but to cut the grease and grime.
What is “washing soda” and where may I find it?
You can find Washing Soda at Walmart. Arm and Hammer makes it. I purchase mine in the cleaning section.

I am so happy I found this on Pinterest! I am constantly looking for non toxic ways to clean my home. I have asthma and very sensitive skin so it’s important for me to find ways of cleaning without harsh chemicals. I will definitely try this!! Thank you again!
I just made this cleaner and I was so excited. While I was mixing it, it turned rock hard and clumpy in the bowl. I couldn’t get it to thin out. I spread some big clumps in the oven and then got a scrubber sponge wet and spread it around a little more. Most of the mixture is still stuck to the glass bowl I made it in! What did I do wrong?? Has this ever happened to you with this recipe?
Hi Dava. I’m so sorry that happened. No, that has never happened. Did you add enough water to it? It sounds like you need more water.
This happened to me too! I kept adding water but the rock hard pieces never softened no matter how hard I smashed. Should I have been using an electric mixer?? I also think I waited too long (only a few seconds though) after the vinegar and maybe shouldn’t have mixed the vinegar in but rather add the water right away.
I didn’t use an electric mixer for this. Typically the only problem with the hard pieces is if it is sitting around like over night. Not in just a few seconds. I would add the water first before the vinegar.
Same thing happened to me. I had a terrible time! It was like the more water I added to thin it out the harder it got.
Wow! I hat cleaning the oven because every time it is really hard work and I don’t have so much time. I hope that this cleaner will help me to clean the oven in an easy way.
Silly question, what is washing soda?
Washing Soda is a derivative of baking soda. You can find it in the isle with the cleaning supplies. Arm and Hammer makes it.
I love the idea of using essential oils in home cleaning. I’m a beginner at homemade cleaning products and yetshave tried a very few solutions, but I’m definitely trying your oven cleaner. Checked the “Detox Your Home” list, thanks for the great recipes!

Can this be used on a gas oven?
I’m not sure. I don’t have a gas oven. If it is ok to use cleaners on your gas oven I would think it would work, but I would refer to your owners manual.
